The International Solidarity Commission of the Industrial Workers of the World extends its solidarity to the workers of Zanon bajo control obrero (Zanon under worker control), who have maintained worker’s self-management at the Zanon ceramic tile factory for the last 15 years.
Faced with period of extreme economic crisis, massive worker lay-offs, and a boss ready to shutter the doors, Zanon workers and the Ceramic Workers’ Union (Sindicato de Obreros y Empleados Ceramistas de Neuquén) engaged in a bitter struggle against the closure of their factory. By establishing a strike fund and forming factory assemblies workers staved off hunger, and through extreme persistence eventually expropriated the Zanon factory in their fight against the employing class. Now, faced with increases in the price of utilities imposed by the neoliberal Mauricio Macri presidency (called the ‘tarifazo’), as well as aging equipment within the facility, Zanon workers are in need of solidarity and support.
The driving up of public utility costs are a direct assault on Zanon bajo control obrero and all members of the Argentine working class. During this period of intense economic hardship, we stand in solidarity with the workers of the self-managed Zanon factory in opposition to all efforts by the employing and political classes to control and profit from life’s basic provisions. Zanon bajo control obrero has called for contributions to their solidarity fund to defend their workers’ self-management in the face of increasing costs.
