The International Solidarity Commission of the Industrial Workers of the World extends its solidarity to the thousands of medical professionals taking strike action for the first time in over 40 years on Tuesday 12th January 2016.
The British government’s attempts to paint junior doctors within the National Health Service (NHS) as lazy and money grabbing are as shameful as they are dishonest. The claims that the changes to the contract are needed in order to provide a ‘7 day service’ ignore the fact that junior doctors already work nights and weekends. Demanding more out of hours work while reducing their pay is just going to lead to a drop in quality of care for the British public. The government attempted to claim that the strike was irresponsible as it would lead to a drop in patient care; however, it is the government’s actions which threaten patients. Instead of trying to improve the NHS, the British government is instead trying to destroy it in order to allow their friends to make even greater profit from people’s health.
The constant attempts to privatise the NHS in the UK are part of a wider attempt by the forces of capital to profit from the suffering of others. Wherever we are in the world, we must oppose the capitalist class profiteering from the basic needs of life.
An injury to one is an injury to all!
